What are the potential side effects of ESWT ?
The main benefit of ESWT is that its non-invasive & non surgical. Extra Corporeal means outside (extra) of the body (Corporeal), so there is no need for invasive surgery. Depending on the patient and the diagnosis there may be mild temporary discomfort during the treatment. The shock waves are targeted to the point of maximum symptoms to optimize healing. There can be at times skin redness, bruising, skin irritation or soreness. If these symptoms occur during or after treatment they are short in duration and self resolving.
Who Should avoid ESWT ?
Complications are infrequent with shock wave therapy. Patients who have nerve problems such as, poor sensation or neuropathy from diabetes, or increased hypersensitivity in conditions like rheumatoid arthritis on the targeted area should avoid ESWT. Cancer lesions or tumors in the area of the treatment site, and blood thrombosis should avoid treatments. Open sores should be avoided. Should not be used during pregnancy.
